Paternal Relative Comparison (Y-STR) – (Male Chromosome DNA Testing)
Paternal relative DNA tests are used when a client needs to prove or deny a biological relationship between two males. Because the test analyzes genes on the Y— male— chromosome, it is useful for testing males. If the father is not available or willing to be tested, this DNA test can be employed to provide evidence of a child’s paternity. Two males who have the same father will have similar DNA profiles on the Y chromosome. Conversely, two males who are not related will have different DNA profiles.
A grandfather and a male child, for instance, would share the same Y chromosome, as would an uncle and a nephew. Although the Y-STR DNA test can identify relatives and ancestors through the male (paternal) line— for genealogy charts, for instance— it is not applicable for determining blood relatives for immigration authorities.
This is the only test that inspects the DNA for markers specific to the male chromosome. Another test (Maternal Relative Comparison or MtDNA) examines the genetic profile for biological relationships by using the female side of the ancestry.
Y- Chromosome DNA
The Y-STR DNA test is a blood line test and it is completed by obtaining a simple cheek (buccal) swab. The test can be administered by simply calling one of offices to arrange for your appointment and we will collect the samples and you may chose to have the test for legal purposes or for personal use.

For legal purposes, the Y-STR test can be analyzed by our contract partner, which is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). These test results are accepted in a court of law, and are used in cases involving inheritance or estate settlements; criminal cases; child custody or support; and other situations.
With the court-admissible DNA test, the sample is collected by an unrelated third party. The entire process— sampling, storage, shipping, delivery— is monitored and documented in the chain-of-custody proceeding ordered by the court.
DNA Passed Down the Line Via Male Genes
While there are a few different ways to prove paternal relationships, the Y-STR DNA test is one of the most direct. Males who are related will have the same information on the Y chromosome. If there is no biological relationship, the Y chromosomes will show very different profiles.
The DNA test is the gold standard for proof of ancestry. Genetic analysis can have as little as near-zero probability of error. There is no greater proof in the legal system. Compared with DNA testing, the old method of fingerprinting suspects for identification is crude and outdated.
